What to Wear

Thank you for choosing Sarah Owen Photography to capture your families memories! I am SO excited about working with you, and I understand that deciding what to wear for your photo session can seem like a daunting task. I’m here to take some of the guesswork out.

Colors

Please avoid any neon/bright colors - bright colors can almost reflect onto other things in the photos and can really impact the overall coloring of the images.

Think about wearing muted colors, such as pastels or earthier tones.

Everyone should be wearing similar, complimentary colors.

When selecting an outfit, consider your skin tone and wear colors that won't wash you out.

Complimentary Colors: (yellow and purple, blue and orange, red and green, yellow-orange and blue-purple (indigo), orange-red and blue-green (aqua), red-purple (pink) and green-yellow).

Below are some sample color themes. You do not need to stick to these exact colors by any means, these are simply showing you some different color options/combinations to help you visualize your style. I'm always available for consulting on outfit choices, so don't hesitate to email me!

Patterns

Be cognizant of the pattern choice and avoid anything that is too busy and/or distracting in any way.

Avoid clothing that has large or distracting logos or logos with words.

Identical patterns are ok, but otherwise avoid using too many patterns, I recommend limiting to one pattern.

Avoid thin stripes or tight plaid patterns, as they do not photograph well.

When using a pattern in your group's attire, other members of the group should pull colors from the pattern to create a cohesive look.

This look is perfect - the girls dresses are idenitcal and Mom and Dad picked almost matching colors (both pulled from the girls dress).

I love the way the patterned dress pops against the rest of the families outfits. Great choices and really shows how pulling from that pattern makes such a cohesive look.

An example of two patterns, that worked pretty well. Dad's plaid isn't too distracting because the colors are muted and the plaid is a wider pattern. Mom and baby are perfectly matching in their greens, that are pulled from big siters dress.

Additional Tips

Keep an eye on the forecast and dress accordingly. In winter, wear layers and bring clothes to take breaks and warm up. In the summer, make sure to wear light, breathable clothing in light colors to stay cool.

Wear what makes you comfortable. The most important thing to me is capturing your family as they truly are and I don't want you to look back at your photos years from now and wonder who those people are!

Wear minimal accessories that are not distracting.

Please make sure to wear appropriate footwear during sessions, bring a change of shoes if you'd like to have different shoes in the photo. Some venues require walking.

Remember to have fun!

This is such a clean look - the boys all in light blue, except for little brother who is rocking the denim look. Mom finishes off the clean look with an off white dress!

A beautiful winter look. Mom's flowing skirt is the perfect compliment to the little Miss wearing a pink romper. Brother and Dad are looking great in almost matching outfits.

An example of multiple patterns that works - Dad's shirt is muted enough that you almost don't notice it's a plaid. Mom is rocking that holiday dress, with her little man in matching red!
